Type Locality and Naming

Save Basin (Southeastern Zimbabwe). Named for local geographic features in the Save Basin of southeastern Zimbabwe. It is a formally recognized lithostratigraphic unit representing the basal sandstone package of the post-glacial Karoo sequence in this basin. Lowermost unit in Ecca Gr in Save Basin

An arenaceous (sandy) succession consisting predominantly of sandstones.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the basal Dwyka Glacial Beds (Dwyka Gr)

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the highly carbonaceous Lundi Coal Measures Fm

Regional extent

Geographically restricted to the Save Basin in southeastern Zimbabwe. Basal Ecca Gr equivalent. In detailed basin stratigraphy, it is often referred to specifically as the Lower Mkushwe Sandstone.
